Thursday at 10:00 a.m.: Florida escaped the worst of Hurricane Dorian as the storm died from a Category 5 to a Category 2 and skirted the state’s east coast after devastating the Bahamas where the death toll has climbed to 20. Now restrengthened to a Category 3, Dorian is heading toward the coasts of South and North Carolina at 8 mph with maximum sustained winds at 115 mph. As the storm is no longer within WUFT’s coverage zone, no more updates will be made.
Update, Wednesday at 2:15 p.m.: Hurricane Dorian is located 115 miles east of Jacksonville and continues to move north-northwest at 9 mph toward the coasts of South and North Carolina. The Category 2 storm’s sustained winds are at 105 mph. Hurricane-force winds extend out up to 70 miles from the center, and tropical-storm-force winds extend out up to 175 miles. Rain bands are sweeping through north/northeastern portions of the state, bringing coastal areas gusts of 30-40 mph and inland area gust of 20-30 mph.

A storm surge warning is in effect for Flagler County and St. Johns County.
A Hurricane Warning is in effect for:

  • North of Edisto Beach, S.C. to South Santee River, S.C.
  • Albemarle and Pamlico Sounds

A Hurricane Watch is in effect for:

  • North of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. to Edisto Beach, S.C.
  • North of South Santee River, S.C. to Duck, N.C.
  • North of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. to Savannah River

A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for:

  • North of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. to Edisto Beach, S.C.
  • Brevard/Volusia County line to Savannah River

Storm Surge: The combination of a dangerous storm surge and the tide will cause normally dry areas near the Florida coast to be flooded by rising waters moving inland from the shoreline. The water could reach the following heights above ground somewhere in the indicated areas if the peak surge occurs at the time of high tide:

  • Volusia/Brevard County line to the Savannah River…3 to 5 feet
  • Albemarle and Pamlico Sounds…4 to 6 feet
  • Volusia/Brevard County line…2 to 4 feet


Water levels could begin to rise well in advance of the arrival of strong winds. The surge will be accompanied by large and destructive waves. Surge-related flooding depends on how close the center of Dorian comes to the coast and can vary greatly over short distances.
Wind: Maximum sustained winds were up to 155 mph with gusts up to 190 mph and the minimum central pressure was at 938 mb, according to the latest update from the National Hurricane Center.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 45 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 140 miles. Although gradual weakening is forecast, Dorian is expected to remain a powerful hurricane during the next couple of days.
Hurricane conditions are expected within the hurricane warning area in Florida by late tonight or Tuesday. Hurricane conditions are possible in the hurricane watch area on Wednesday. Tropical storm conditions are expected within the tropical storm warning area today and Tuesday and are possible in the tropical storm watch area by tonight.
Rainfall: Dorian is expected to produce the following rainfall totals through late this week:

  • Northwestern Bahamas…12 to 24 inches, isolated 30 inches.
  • Central Bahamas…Additional 1 to 3 inches, isolated storm totals of 6 inches.
  • Coastal Carolinas…5 to 10 inches, isolated 15 inches.
  • Atlantic Coast from the Florida peninsula through Georgia…4 to 8 inches, isolated 10 inches.

This rainfall may cause life-threatening flash floods.
Surf: Large swells are affecting east-facing shores of the Bahamas and the Florida east coast, and will spread northward along the southeastern United States coast during the next few days. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
Tornados: Isolated tornadoes are possible this afternoon into tonight along the immediate coast of east-central Florida.

Brevard County – Mandatory    
Brevard County Issues Mandatory Evacuation Order Ahead of #Dorian The following residents should START evacuating on Monday, September 2 at 8 a.m.: -those who live on the barrier islands, including areas from Kennedy Space Center south to the south beaches, and Merritt Island, -those in mobile homes or manufactured housing, -those in low-lying, flood-prone areas, -those with special medical needs such as electrical dependence. Shelter details are still being finalized and will be announced later. Public shelters will be made available for general population, families wishing to bring their pets and those with special medical needs.
Tuesday, September 3 at 2 p.m.: The mandatory evacuation is still in place. Brevard is expected to receive tropical storm force winds and localized flooding.
Duval County – Mandatory
Mandatory Evacuations for Zones A and B, as well as Huguenot and Hanna parks, effective 8 a.m. Monday, Sept. 2.. Residents who live in Zones A and B should begin to make the necessary arrangements and prepare to leave starting Monday, Sept. 2.
Flagler County – Mandatory
Effective at noon today, residents and visitors in Evacuation Zones A, B, and F, as well as those living in flood prone areas and mobile/manufactured homes countywide, are directed to evacuate in advance of Hurricane Dorian’s impact to Flagler County.

Residents whose evacuation plan is to remain in Flagler County, be sure to complete your evacuation no later than 3 p.m. on Tuesday.

Glades County – Voluntary/Phased    
Voluntary evacuations are being ordered starting at 5pm tonight (08/30/2019) for all low lying areas, mobile home parks and RV parks for the following communities: Moore haven, Palmdale, Lakeport, Washington Park, Buckhead Ridge and Uncle Joe Fish Camp.
Hendry County – Voluntary/Phased    
(August 30, 2019) – LaBelle, Fla. – Voluntarily evacuation for residents who live in low-lying, flood prone areas as well as residents who live in RV’s or mobile homes to a safer structure. Residents are encouraged to evacuate tens of miles away from current location to secure homes of family member or friends no later than Saturday evening. Hendry County will open shelters to the public beginning at 4pm on Saturday, August 31. Residents who live on the eastern side of Hendry County who need to evacuate are encouraged to evacuate to shelters in LaBelle.
Highlands County – Voluntary    
Citizens who reside in low lying areas, mobile homes and RV’s are advised to take necessary precautions in preparation of high winds and rain over the next few days.
Indian River County – Mandatory    
Voluntary evacuations for the barrier islands, east of US 1, manufactured homes, and substandard homes.
Martin County – Mandatory   
Mandatory evacuations of Zones A-B will go into affect at 1300 today. This includes Hutchinson Island, Jupiter Island, Sewall’s Point, low lying areas, and mobile and manufactured homes.
Nassau County – Mandatory    
09/02/2019 Nassau County Emergency Management will begin mandatory evacuation from Zones A, C and F beginning at 8am this morning.
Okeechobee County – Voluntary/Phased    
A voluntary evacuation order, effective on today, Sunday, September 1, 2019, has been issued for residents living in RVs, mobile homes and low lying areas, and those areas prone to flooding. 
Osceola County – Voluntary/Phased    
Osceola County issued a voluntary evacuation for low lying areas and manufactured and mobile homes to ensure the health, safety, and welfare of the community.
Palm Beach County – Mandatory    
Starting 1pm Today (9/1/2019) Mandatory evacuation order for those who live in Zone A and Zone B. Zone A includes mobile homes, sub-standard housing and low-lying areas prone to water intrusion. Zone B includes the barrier islands, land areas north and south of the Jupiter Inlet, and other surge-vulnerable areas south along the Intracoastal Waterway to the Broward County line.
Putnam County – Mandatory    
St. Johns County – Mandatory    
St. Johns County has issued mandatory evacuation orders effective for 8 a.m. on Monday, September 2 for Evacuation Zones A and B, which includes the entire City of St. Augustine, the City of St. Augustine Beach, and those living on waterfront property or in flood-prone areas. In addition, the County has ordered evacuations for Hastings and Flagler Estates.
St. Lucie County – Mandatory    
St. Lucie county has issued a mandatory evacuation order for residents on the barrier island (North and South Hutchinson Island), those living in low-lying coastal areas and mobile homes. That order will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday (9/1/2019).
Volusia County – Mandatory    
Volusia County officials will issue a mandatory evacuation order at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 2, for residents who live on the beachside and in low-lying areas, RVs and mobile homes. However, residents don’t have to wait until the order is issued. If you have a place to go, it would be best to leave the area today.

Alachua County: Sandbags are available with a limit of 10 per person:

Bradford County: Sandbag distribution began Thursday at noon.

  • Sheriff’s Office maintenance yard, 810 North Grand St., Starke
    • Access will be off Davis Street at Bradford Gun & Pawn.

Citrus County: Sandbags locations will open Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. There is a limit of 15 bags per vehicle.

Dixie County: Sandbags are now available at the County Yard.

Gilchrist County: No sandbag locations have been announced as of Friday morning.
Hernando County: Sandbag locations are self serve and will be open Friday from noon to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
